VALUES, LEGACY AND PERFORMANCE OVER THE PAST 18 MONTHS THE FORMER ALL BLACKS COACH TRAVELLED THE COUNTRY, LOOKING AT DOWNER TEAMS IN ACTION… HOW THEY FUNCTION, HOW THEY ARE LED AND HOW THEY NURTURE TALENT. WHAT HE’S DISCOVERED HAS COME AS SOMETHING OF A SURPRISE TO THE MAN WHO USHERED THE ALL BLACKS TO VICTORY IN THE 2011 RUGBY WORLD CUP. SIR GRAHAM HENRY TALKS TO CAMERON BENNETT ABOUT GETTING TO KNOW DOWNER, LIFE WITH THE ALL BLACKS, & WHAT THE TWO HAVE IN COMMON. LEGACY “I believe legacy is hugely important, and the All Blacks have a legacy that’s lasted for more than 105 years. It is the most successful sporting team in the world. Not Manchester United, not Barcelona, not the New York Giants – on games played and won, the All Blacks are the most successful team in the world. I know what it’s like to add to that legacy – it’s huge. I think that’s where Downer wants to get to. It is a very successful company and employs about one per cent of New Zealand’s working population, around 5000 people. And yet, I suspect that half of this country’s population doesn’t really know about Downer. It’s not as well known as companies like Air New Zealand, but it should be. I’ve been bloody amazed by what they’re doing for people, not only employing them and paying them a wage but also developing them. I’m very proud to be associated with Downer – I’m hooked!” DOWNER / IN BLACK & WHITE / 5
