Road Science was born in 2012 out of Downer Bitumen Supply to more accurately reflect the company’s focus on the science of road pavements and surfaces. For far too long, says Road Science Technical Manager John Vercoe, research in the industry has been haphazard. “It’s tended to take the empirical route – try something, and if that doesn’t work, try something else. It has often relied on common knowledge – ‘this is the way things have always been done’.” When you enjoy the smooth swish of paint onto a wall, or the feel of a cream smearing onto your skin, you’re benefiting from technology that has been transferred to road surfacing with great success. Mt Maunganui-based Road Science has tapped the lessons learned in the paints and cosmetics industries to develop and supply new road surfaces that are safer to use, more flexible and better value. And as a consequence, the company is changing the way the industry works. WHICH HAS THE MOST ADVANCED TECHNOLOGY? CAR OR ROAD?
