People’s confidence was building and they were starting to take the initiative – doing work with less and less direction.” Scoones got a lot of satisfaction from seeing new recruits become competent in operating plant and machinery: “It is great to watch people pick up new skills because they can be used on other jobs in the future,” he says. “As the project rolled along I was able to give more challenging roles to people who I thought were keen.” Having long since returned to New Zealand, Scoones is working as a site engineer but is looking forward to other opportunities to travel with Downer. “I like going to remote places,” he says. “So the opportunity to work somewhere new is always good.” RUSSELL SCOONES WHERE IN THE WORLD…?
